Richie's everyday life as a DEV trainee: a look behind the scenes

5 questions for Richie: The normal DEV madness

How did you hear about Digital Experts and how would you describe the Halvotec Group as an employer?

I joined Digital Experts in my second semester on the recommendation of a friend. She told me that the atmosphere in the company is super friendly and open. What's more, the colleagues in the team are all still relatively young. That immediately appealed to me. I can now confirm this myself - the atmosphere is really pleasant and you have the opportunity to actively shape your own working day.

What does the typical working day as a student trainee in Dev look like and what are the biggest challenges?

My typical day starts with a coffee. After that, I usually start straight away: I usually have one or more tickets that I work on throughout the day. These can either be specific tasks, such as integrating new elements into current projects (React or .NET depending on the type), checking errors at a customer or general tasks, such as familiarizing myself with a new subject area.

How was the collaboration with your colleagues? Were you able to benefit from their know-how?

The cooperation with my colleagues is always very open and everyone is super helpful, as we are all pulling in the same direction and pursuing the same goal. I don't think that's something that can be taken for granted, because during my internships in larger companies in particular, I often experienced a lack of motivation or lone wolves gaining the upper hand.

As a working student, you have the opportunity to gain practical experience and develop both personally and professionally. What skill do you have now that you didn't know you had?

Now and again, as a developer, it is also necessary to communicate directly with customers to explain various topics from a technical perspective. Over time, I've realized that I'm better at this than I originally thought, even if it's sometimes like speaking different languages. 😉

What has been the coolest project you have done so far as part of your work-study program and why?

I have two candidates for the coolest project: During a recent project, I was able to take over the complete document generation. This was particularly exciting because I had to develop a new approach to creating the documents from scratch, as we wanted to replace the old version. It was really cool to have the freedom to try out different solutions and ultimately integrate the best one into our project. However, I am currently also testing local LLMs (Large Language Models) and checking how we can use them for ourselves. This is also becoming one of my favorite tasks. As I've only occasionally dipped my toes into the field of machine learning during my studies, the research and familiarization with the topic are particularly interesting for me.
